Though born and raised in England, explorer HUDSON STUCK (1865-1920) epitomized the adventurous New World spirit of the American West at its closing. Drawn by the wide-open spaces, Stuck, an Episcopal priest and champion of a rugged brand of "muscular Christianity," volunteered in 1904 to serve as the archdeacon of the Yukon; his spiritual domain encompassed 250,000 square miles of interior Alaska. Here, he achieved international fame by leading the first successful expedition, in 1913, to scale the highest peak in North America: Mount McKinley, though Stuck, long a defender of native culture, insisted on calling it by its Indian name, Denali. In this 1914 book, Stuck regales us with his dramatic account of the journey, from the dangers posed by sudden storms to the beauty of the glaciers, from the unexpected setbacks-like the fire that swept through their gear-to the "infinite attractiveness" of the challenge. Armchair travelers and lovers of extreme sports alike will thrill to this exciting tale. ALSO AVAILABLE FROM COSIMO: Stuck's Ten Thousand Miles with a Dog Sled

Excerpt from The Ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley): A Narrative of the First Complete Ascent of the Highest Peak in North America Forefront in this book, because forefront in the author's heart and desire, must stand a plea for the restoration to the greatest mountain in North America of its immemorial native name. If there be any prestige or authority in such matter from the accomplishment of a first complete ascent, "if there be any virtue, if there be any praise," the author values it chiefly as it may give weight to this plea. It is now little more than seventeen years ago that a prospector penetrated from the south into the neighborhood of this mountain, guessed its height with remarkable accuracy at twenty thousand feet, and, ignorant of any name that it already bore, placed upon it the name of the Republican candidate for President of the United States at the approaching election - William McKinley. No voice was raised in protest, for the Alaskan Indian is inarticulate and such white men as knew the old name were absorbed in the search for gold. The Ascent Of Denali is a narrative of the 1913 expedition of the first ascent of Mount KcKinley (aka Denali). Hudson Stuck and his three companions overcame great challenges from extreme cold to explosive storms during their climb. The Katmai explosion and earthquake in 1912 had left their route up the Northeast ridge a jumble of house-sized blocks of ice. Finally on June 7, 1913, the young Athabascan Walter Harper was the first person to set foot on the rooftop of North America. Stuck tells a compelling story complete with observations of the natural world through careful prose. Maps and high-quality photographs make The Ascent of Denali an irresistible adventure.
