There are many classifications of leadership; and research, literature, and journals reveal a person's leadership, personality, skills, and talents are established from multiple factors and experiences. Additionally, a popular field of research is the origins of leadership. Furthermore, research studies about childhood play habits and its effects on children have concluded toys affect children's development and growth. However, studies have yet to explore whether there is a link from childhood play habits of an individual to his leadership behavior later in his life. The purpose of this study was to determine if the childhood play habits of an individual are correlated to his current leadership behavior, either task- or relationship-based. Task-based leaders support others by defining their roles, setting targets, and clearly explaining expectations. On the other hand, relationship-based leaders are more concerned about cultivating relationships with others by making them feel comfortable (Northouse, 2013). Second, a main objective of this study was to investigate whether personality traits have a correlation to leadership style using the commonly known Big 5 personality traits as a measurement. To explore whether personality traits and childhood play habits were correlated to leadership styles, a quantitative research method was used that involved an anonymous, online survey. The survey provided data on participants' task and relationship behaviors, personality traits, childhood play habits, and demographic information. After conducting multiple regression analyses, it was discovered that three personality types and specific toy categories are correlated with a person's leadership behavior. First, the Big 5 personality traits extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness showed positive correlations to leadership behaviors. Additionally, the findings suggest that toys, such as LEGOs or blocks, which encourage children to focus on completing the task at hand and usually involve isolated play, are positively correlated to people with task-orientated leadership behaviors. However, playing with toys such as games, puzzles, action figures, and dolls, are positively correlated to relationship-orientated leadership styles because these types of toys involve more social interaction with other children, caretaking, and nurturing attitudes. Finally, gender differences associated with leadership and play habits were also discovered. In conclusion, it is possible to use childhood play habits to predict whether individuals will exhibit either more task- or relationship-orientated behaviors.
