Feedback is a rare commodity in day-to-day organizational life, but it is a key to ongoing effectiveness. One popular vehicle for getting feedback from one's boss, peers, subordinates, and customers is the multiple-perspective or 360-degree-feedback instrument. Whether part of a management-development course or used alone, this kind of instrument can enhance self-awareness by highlighting a leader's strengths and areas in need of further development.Selecting the right instrument from among the dozens that are available can be difficult, however. This new edition of Feedback to Managers, the fourth, updates and expands the popular 1998 edition. It guides the selection process with an in-depth analysis of 32 publicly available instruments that relate self-view to the views of others on multiple management or leadership domains. Each of the instrument reports includes descriptive information, a look at the research behind the instrument, and descriptions of support materials.

Presentations in Everyday Life began with one simple question: What do real people want and need to know about presentation speaking? The Second Edition continues to provide practical, time-tested answers to this question using the most current communication theory and research available. The authors employ a straightforward approach to appeal to the diverse student body enrolled in introductory public speaking courses. They also place a solid emphasis on the how-tos of selecting the best strategies and developing the necessary skills to become effective speakers. This edition maintains a flexible modular configuration while adding an updated design and enhanced art to help reinforce understanding of concepts covered in the text.New! A greater emphasis on cultural diversity speaks to a wide range of students and adult learners.New! Presentation Principles in Action provides students with a hands-on application of chapter concepts through class exercises, questionnaires, speaking assignments, and assessment instruments.Opening Questions offer a road map to each chapter. The questions are then answered in context in the chapter summary.Mini-modules give step-by-step instruction on presentation techniques often glossed over in other texts. Topics range from microphone use to how to deal with a hostile audience.Real World, Real Speakers--stories told by the authors, presenters, and professionals--illustrate chapter principles and strategies in action while offering honest portraits of potential speaking experiences.FAQs provide short answers to questions students have asked the authors, such as Can I fake charisma? and What should I do with my hands?Tips drawn from theauthors' own experiences provide insider hints such as Never tell your audience you' re nervous and Present more message and less information.

Baseline data in clinical trials consists of information regarding patients that is measured at the outset, prior to randomization (or treatment with study medications). In studies where important baseline factors appear well balanced, it can be reasonably concluded that any differences in outcome between the intervention and control groups are a real effect of treatment. The common assumption that any baseline differences in a randomized study are necessarily random is, however, misplaced. Selection bias can, and does, occur – even in randomized clinical trials. Steps need to be taken in order to ensure that this does not compromise the integrity of clinical trials; hence Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials offers the first comprehensive treatment of the subject and the methodology involved. Provides an overview of the hierarchy of study designs, and justifies the position of randomized trials at the top of this hierarchy. Discusses the strengths and defects of randomization, and provides real evidence to justify concern regarding its defects. Outlays the damaging consequences that selection bias causes when it does occur. Considers courses of action that can be taken to manage/contain the problem. Presents methods that can be used to detect selection bias in randomized trials, and methods to correct for selection bias. Concludes by providing a comprehensive plan for managing baseline imbalances and selection bias in randomized trials, and proposing open problems for future research. Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials provides an in-depth overview of a key aspect in the design and analysis of clinical trials, featuring modern and novel approaches to the methodology described. Illustrated with case studies, this book introduces groundbreaking ideas and research that will be invaluable to researchers and practitioners who design and analyse clinical trials. It will also be of interest to graduate students within the field of biostatistics.

This new fourth edition is designed for use with adults who have suffered a stroke or other brain injury or who are affected by the aging process. While the fundamental format covering such skills areas as visual scanning, reading, observing, information acquisition, listening, memory, and abstract reasoning has remained the same, each of the individual training sections has been revised and updated with additional exercises and teacher suggestions for the teacher-learner team. More training exercises have been added, and the authors address how to use some of the new technology now readily available to enhance the rehabilitation process. The authors focus on the importance of personal choice, responsibility, health, and wellness in successful recovery. The book is designed to be most beneficial when the teacher and learner interact on a one-to-one basis, so that individual needs can be incorporated effectively into the training sessions. Additionally, the exercises encourage the use of basic learning principles such as immediate feedback and positive reinforcement while gradually increasing the difficulty level of the exercises. For each of the training sections, specific suggestions are offered to assist the teacher in finding additional exercises and activities that are personally relevant to the learner. The Thinking Skills Workbook will be a valuable tool for facilitating the recovery of cognitive skills and is written for easy use by professional rehabilitation staff, paraprofessionals, and/or family members. The incorporation of these effective learning strategies, along with the many revisions, will make the book very useful and provide for a rewarding experience for both teacher and learner.
