Many scenes in the latter parts of Death in Venice remind the reader of things that happened near the beginning of the story . The best example is probably the scene where Aschenbach follows the Polish family to mass .

Thomas Mann (1875-1955) won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929. This is a collection of his shorter works. "Death in Venice", later filmed by Lucion Visconti starring Dirk Bogarde, was published in 1911. It is a poetic meditation on art and beauty, where the dying composer Aschenbach (modelled on Gustav Mahler) becomes fixated by the young boy Tadzio. The other stories are: "Tonio Kroger"; the collection entitled "Tristan"; "The Blood of the Walsungs"; "Mario the Magician"; and "The Tables of the Law". A number of essays are also included.

These stories, as direct as Thomas Mann's novels are complex, are perfect illustrations of their author's belief that "a story must tell itself." Varying in theme, in style, in tone, each is in its own way characteristic of Mann's prodigious talents. From the high art of the famous title novella ("A story," Mann said, "of death... of the voluptuousness of doom"), to the irony of "Felix Krull," the early story on which he later based his comic novel The Confessions of Felix Krull, they are stunning testimony to the mastery and virtuosity of a literary giant. "In complex natural resource systems, modifications or disruptions tend to affect many and diverse components of the ecological system, settlements and groups of people. This book uses the Lagoon of Venice - a unique natural resource, wildlife habitat, centre of cultural heritage and recreational site - as an example of one such system that has been heavily affected by human activities, including the harvesting of natural resources and industrial production." "Various market and non-market approaches placing a monetary value on environmental quality changes are then analysed by the contributors. They offer novel and creative applications of non-market valuation techniques for the Lagoon, and even outline the trade-offs that Lagoon users and parties interested in redeveloping contaminated sites are prepared to make between their own profits and policy offerings or demands." "This book will appeal strongly to students, researchers and academics with an interest in natural resources valuation and management, environmental economics and applied benefit-cost analysis."--BOOK JACKET.
