Linear systems can be regarded as a causal shift-invariant operator on a Hilbert space of signals, and by doing so this book presents an introduction to the common ground between operator theory and linear systems theory. The book therefore includes material on pure mathematical topics such as Hardy spaces, closed operators, the gap metric, semigroups, shift-invariant subspaces, the commutant lifting theorem and almost-periodic functions, which would be entirely suitable for a course in functional analysis; at the same time, the book includes applications to partial differential equations, to the stability and stabilization of linear systems, to power signal spaces (including some recent material not previously available in books), and to delay systems, treated from an input/output point of view. Model reduction is an important engineering problem in which one aims to replace an elaborate model by a simpler model without undue loss of accuracy. The accuracy can be mathematically measured in several possible norms and the Hankel norm is one such. The Hankel norm gives a meaningful notion of distance between two linear systems: roughly speaking, it is the induced norm of the operator that maps past inputs to future outputs. It turns out that the engineering problem of model reduction in the Hankel norm is closely related to the mathematical problem of finding solutions to the sub-optimal Nehari-Takagi problem, which is called "the sub-optimal Hankel norm approximation problem" in this book. Although the existence of a solution to the sub-optimal Hankel norm approximation problem has been known since the 1970's, this book presents explicit solutions and, in particular, new formulae for several large classes of infinite-dimensional systems for the first time.

Applying functional analysis and operator theory to some concrete asymptotic problems of linear algebra, this book contains results on the stability of projection methods, deals with asymptotic inverses and Moore-Penrose inversion of large Toeplitz matrices, and embarks on the asymptotic behaviour of the norms of inverses, the pseudospectra, the singular values, and the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. The approach is heavily based on Banach algebra techniques and nicely demonstrates the usefulness of C*-algebras and local principles in numerical analysis, including classical topics as well as results and methods from the last few years. Though employing modern tools, the exposition is elementary and points out the mathematical background behind some interesting phenomena encountered with large Toeplitz matrices. Accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional analysis, the book addresses graduates, teachers, and researchers and should be of interest to everyone who has to deal with infinite matrices (Toeplitz or not) and their large truncations.

Infinite dimensional systems is now an established area of research. Given the recent trend in systems theory and in applications towards a synthesis of time- and frequency-domain methods, there is a need for an introductory text which treats both state-space and frequency-domain aspects in an integrated fashion.
