Whereas irrigation and drainage are intended to address the shortage and surplus of soil water, respectively, an important aspect to address is also the management of salinity. Plants have a limited tolerance for soil water salinity, and despite significant gaps in our practical knowledge, an impression of acceptable salinities is available for many crops. To manage soil salinity, the Leaching Requirement is an old, yet useful, concept. In this chapter, we extend this concept for soils with shallow groundwater. Particularly if shallow groundwater is saline, management is needed to avoid capillary rise of this water into the root zone. One of the tools to do so is Climate Adaptive Drainage (CAD), for which many practical gaps in knowledge remain. Also, soil mulching, of which a special case is considered in more detail, id est, using plastic covers, may be beneficial for many purposes, including improving the water and salt balances of the root zone. However, use of plastics may have significant adverse effects. Due to water shortage, also wastewater may be re-used for irrigation. For this reason, the hazard of sodicity due to elevated Na concentrations in domestic wastewater is highlighted.

The scarcity of good quality irrigation water is a serious problem in arid and semiarid zones of the world which comprise one third of the earth. Fresh water resources which are very scarce, forming only 3% of the total water reserves are overexploited and consequently have been tending to cause salinisation. Remaining 97% water in sea is excessively saline and generally not suitable for large scale exploitation in agriculture. More than half of the world's ground water supplies are also saline. Although, to cope with the increasing requirements of the accelerating population, irrigated area in the world in last two centuries has increased from 8 mha (1800) to 220 mha (1990), but development of salinity on about half the irrigated land, caused due to indiscriminate use of waters, has been a serious constraint for optimum crop production. In this context, the rational use of irrigation waters, without development of salinity, is the most important challenging task and herein lies the value of scientific knowledge on the use of saline water in agriculture. The first edition of this monograph was published in 1979 and second revised edition was published in 1990. The purpose of the present third revised edition was to update the relevant information so that the latest synthesised knowledge becomes easily accessible to research workers, teachers, postgraduate students, extension people, and planners, who can utilise it profitably in the diagnosis and improvement of saline water irrigated agriculture. Modern Land Drainage 2nd edition is a fully revised and updated edition of the 2004 edition. The current book attempts to fill the gap in one of the major subject of land drainage that will have a major impact on production and productivity of irrigated lands. The book Titled `Drainage Engineering: Principles and Practices` deals with the subject of surface and subsurface drainage to reclaim waterlogged salt affected soils.
